A personal appeal from Collette Flanagan
Founder, Mothers Against Police Brutality

Mothers Against Police Brutality is a national organization based in Dallas, Texas. The purposes of MAPB are to stop unaccountable use of police deadly force, particularly the killing of unarmed and mentally ill persons; to change the deadly force policies and practices in the City of Dallas and nationally; to support families who have lost loved ones to police violence; and to help restore trust between the police and the communities they are sworn to serve and protect.
MAPB's work based in the experience of Mothers and families who have lost their loved ones to police violence.

I founded MAPB after my son, Clinton Allen, an unarmed 25-year-old African American, was shot to death by a Dallas police officer in 2013.

I would not wish upon any parent the loss of a child. I would not wish upon any family the loss of a cherished son to violence. But to lose a son to official police violence is a sorrow beyond grief.

This base in the lived experience of Mothers is combined with expertise in community organizing, direct action protest, policy advocacy, research, and media relations to develop the strength and staying power to effect major change.

Our Focus

MAPB’s focus is the encounter between a person in custody and the police officers who have detained him or her. Despite all progress on race in the past 50 years (e.g., public accommodations, voting rights), in this encounter very little progress has been made. MAPB understands the relationship between police use of deadly force and broader political issues (e.g., mass incarceration), but our focus is ending the unjust, unaccountable use of deadly force as central to restoring the social contract for all Americans.

Our Policy Work

MAPB works on changing policy at the local, state and federal level that will improve local prosecutions and increase federal involvement in officer involved shootings

This is what Mothers Against Police Brutality is all about. And this is why I am seeking your support. Will you join us? Will you contribute to this vital work to realize justice for all?
